IRC

IRC (Internet Relay Chat) was invented by Jarkko Oikarinen.
It is a method of group communication utilizing plain text.

A channel is somewhat like a discussion forum.
Commands are plain text entries that are preceeded by a slash like /kill which punts a user from the network.

I would not recommend the use of IRC as an avenue of intracompany communications due to its inherent lack of security. Email and if necessary instant messaging clients like AOL Insant messager would work better.
